Not everyone likes to buy rare or designer dog breeds, costing lakhs of rupees. If you are like me, who wants a friendly, playful, and loyal companion who can bring joy to your life without putting a hole in your pocket, then you are at the right place.
So for my research, I called nearly 50 dog breeders and sellers around India and asked them the prices of various dog breeds and made this list of 9 Dog Breeds under ₹20,000 in India.
1. Labrador Retriever
Labrador Retrievers are friendly, lovable, and energetic dogs. They are also commonly called labradors or ‘Labs’. They are quite popular in India.
History
The origin of Labrador is from the United Kingdom, where they were bred to retrieve birds as they have a very soft feel to the mouth.
Personality
Labrador Retrievers are bouncy, cheerful, loyal, and enthusiastic. They are friendly and loving with children and family. They are active dogs and always ready to play.
Things to consider
- Need a lot of exercises.
- They can be a little rowdy and mischievous in their puppyhood.
- They are prone to separation anxiety.
- They are foodies and love to eat which makes them prone to obesity.

2. German Shepherd
German Shepherds are medium to large size working dogs. They are highly intelligent and can be trained easily. German Shepherds are one of the most popular dog breeds in the USA.
History
As the name suggests, German Shepherds are originally from Germany. They were used by shepherds to herd sheep.
Personality
They are known for their confidence, courage, intelligence, and gentle nature. They tend to learn quickly and are very loyal to their humans. They are energetic and would love to play for hours.
Things to consider
- They have a thick double coat because of which they can get heated easily and they shed a lot.
- You need a high degree of control and training to have a German Shepherd.
- One needs to be careful before getting a German Shepherd as they are a strong and intelligent breed that needs a lot of mental stimulation.
- They are a large breed that needs an ample amount of space.
Cost of German Shepherd: ₹18,000 – ₹40,000 depending on the city.
3. Golden Retriever
Golden Retrievers are fluff balls with a golden shiny soft coat. They are very lovable and friendly. Best suited as family dogs. They are known for their gentle and playful nature.
History
Golden Retriever was bred to retrieve shot waterfowl during hunting and shooting parties. They were originally bred in Scotland, long back when hunting was a popular sport.

Golden Retriever are loyal, loving, and friendly dogs. As they are from the working group of dogs they love to help humans such as retrieving newspapers and looking out on kids. They are energetic dogs who need at least one hour of daily exercise.

- They have a long and thick coat because of which they shed a lot.
- They are family dogs who need to stay inside the house and always need attention and frequent love.
- Goldens love to eat which tends to make them overweight if overfed.

4. Dachshund
Dachshunds are small dogs with lots of energy. They are famous for their unique body type which is having small legs. They are also called sausage dogs. With a little bit of stubbornness, Dachshunds make a great family dog.

Dachshunds originated in Germany. They come from a family of hounds. They were bred to hunt badgers. Dachshunds were kept by royal courts all over Europe, including Queen Victoria.

The flap-down ears and famous curved tail of the dachshund are adorable. Dachshunds have an energetic and alert personality which makes them good family dogs. But they have a reputation for being stubborn and mischievous.

- Dachshunds may require special accommodations for getting around the house as they cannot climb stairs because of their tiny legs.
- They are a loud breed. Their bark can be piercing.
- As you must have heard about this they are a bit hard to train because of their notorious behavior and stubborn nature.

5. Dalmatian
Dalmatians are known for their unique white coat marked with black or brown-colored spots. They are large-medium-sized dogs. Dalmatians got their popularity from the Disney movie 101 Dalmatians.

Dalmatians were originally bred as hunting dogs. In their early days, they were also used as carriage dogs. They are from Croatia.

Dals are total goofballs. They have playful personalities. They are a smart breed which makes them an ideal dog breed for families with kids. They are loyal and people-pleasing.
Things to consider
- They have a playful personality so it’s advisable to train them from their puppy age.
- Dalmatians need daily exercise otherwise they will get bored and destructive.
- They are sensitive and don’t do well when left alone.
- Even if they have short fur, they shed throughout the year.

6. Beagle
Beagles are sweet, loving, playful, and energetic dogs. They are good with children as they always want to play and at the same time want to cuddle too. They are smart curious dogs as they were bred to track rabbits and hares.

Beagles are hound dogs and they have an amazing sense of smell. They were bred to track down scents and chase small animals while hunting. They were originated in England.

They are friendly, energetic, and loving dogs who need a lot of daily exercise. With their high energy, they can play for hours. As being curious and scent hounds if left alone in the backyard they will find their way to entertain themselves by digging, howling, and trying to escape.

- They need a lot of exercises as they are small and tend to gain weight quickly
- Beagles need attention, if left alone they will get bored and start their mischiefs around
- They shed quite a lot, brushing them thrice a week will keep dead hair from building up
- Beagles are definitely a smart breed but they are also a little stubborn which makes them slow learners when it comes to training, so make sure you train them from starting

7. Doberman Pinscher
Loyal guard dogs are the first thing that comes to my mind when I hear the name Doberman Pinscher. But that is not the case, Doberman Pinschers are a gentle and loving breed. Athletic and faithful by nature they make one of the best Family dogs.

Doberman Pinscher was originally bred in Germany. They were bred to protect the owners and their houses.
Personality
Doberman Pinschers are highly intelligent, courageous, and deeply loyal canines. They need an owner who has a lot of patience while training them. Once they are comfortable with you they can be super loving and caring. Daily walks and physical exercise keep them happy.

- Doberman Pinschers need daily physical and mental nourishment, a good run or an exciting game is a must for them.
- They are very protective of their owners, training them when they are a puppy is advisable.
- They are large dogs so before deciding to take them make sure you have ample amount of space in the house.

If you want a house dog who are small, calm, and kind of laid back then Pugs are for you. This breed got its popularity in India because of Vodafone advertisement.

Pugs were brought from China to Europe. They were bred to be companions in ruling families in China. These breeds have stamped their mark from ancient times. They are the best when it comes to apartment owners who are old because they don’t require much indoor space or activity.
Personality
Pugs are all time ready for snuggles and being on the couch with you for long hours. They can be a little stubborn sometimes but nonetheless, they are adorable dogs. They love kids and kids love them. So sit relaxed if you have a pug in your family as your children will enjoy their time with their best buddy.

- They are house dogs so they can not survive outside unattended for long
- They don’t have much fur on them because of which extreme weather may get tough on them
- They have big eyes because of which they may tend to have eye injuries
- They are a bit stubborn which may hamper their training

They are known to be from Pomerania which is located in Northern Poland and Germany along the Baltic Sea. They are quite popular and are owned by many royal owners.

- They have a beautiful long coat which means they shed a lot, regularly brushing and grooming them is necessary.
- They bark a lot and can be quite loud for some people, their voice is a bit squicky
- They have a big dog attitude and don’t realize that they are actually very small.
