The Nadan Dog is one of the pure dog breeds that originated from India. Their breeding process does not require any human intervention and is easily available for you on streets and shelters around you to adopt. They aren’t high maintenance and can very well adjust in your family if taken good care of and provided with early socialization.

Nadan dogs are called by various other names such as the Indian Pariah dog, Pye or Pei dog, etc. They are said to be one of the oldest dog breeds of Indian origin. In this article, we will study and know about the Nadan Dog in detail. So let’s get started.

History

The Nadan Dog, also known as the Indian Pariah, is an ancient autochthonous landrace that is found all over India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, and even beyond South Asia.

These dogs have been present in Indian villages and cities since the start, so no one knows the exact start period of their existence.

There is some historical and archaeological evidence of these dogs to be present since the Neolithic age. Some remains have also been found at the Indian site of Mohenjo Daro site by the archaeologists proving this breed to be very ancient in nature.

The breed was often intentionally downplayed by merchants in the British Raj who wished to sell foreign breeds within the country. In recent years, the popularity of this breed has reached heights, due to which hundreds of dogs have been exported outside India.

Appearance

It is a medium-sized dog breed with a square to slightly rectangular build, having ears that are pointed and erect, and dark brown almond-shaped eyes. It has a wedge-shaped head, a pointed muzzle, and a tail that is long and curved held over its back. The breed has a double coat, a coarse upper coat, and a soft undercoat.

Male Nadan dogs can weigh from 20-30 kgs while the females weigh from 15-25 kgs. Their height can vary from 27 to 32 inches. They are usually found in colors varying from light tan to dark reddish-brown. Black, tan and piebald colors are also very common with this breed.

Temperament

Nadan dogs are very alert and social. Being territorial and defensive, they are used as guard dogs and police dogs. They are very cautious in nature, but they will get along well with you once they realize that you’re not a threat.

Apart from this, they are very playful and love being around children which makes them one of the best family dogs. Because of their guarding instincts, they would protect your kids and property at all costs. They are highly intelligent and easily trainable.

However, you need to provide them with early socialization so that they are able to differentiate between threats and get familiar with strangers.

Health

As this breed is naturally evolved, it has very few health concerns and easily adapts and thrives in extreme weather conditions.

General issues like hip dysplasia and patellar luxation are present but extremely rare in this breed. Also, the latter disease isn’t serious and can get cured by itself as your dog moves here and there. But if you notice any signs of illness, it is better to take them to the veterinarian before things get worse.

They have very less grooming and maintenance requirements, also they are themselves relatively clean and tidy. Most of the deaths of this breed occur due to lack of food, tumors in the body, road and rail accidents, and so on.

Grooming

This breed does not require much maintenance when it comes to its grooming. They shed all year long, but you wouldn’t see hair all over the house. Just brush their hair and skin regularly to minimize this problem and effectively remove all dead hair from the coat. They have fewer oil glands on the coat, which helps prevent all odors on the body.

Make sure you brush their teeth regularly to prevent the formation of plaque and ensure fresh breath at all times. Also, trimming the nails of your dog is a good habit as it would stop it from injuring itself. Not much is required to be done as they are known to keep themselves clean naturally.

Training and Intelligence

This breed is said to be one of the most trainable dog breeds as they are highly active and intelligent.

Although you would have to identify the temperament of the pup to understand the training procedure for your dog.  Some turn out to be shy at first and might take much time to get trained, but you must remember that every dog will train at its own pace.

Starting from the basics and then going for advanced can be one of the ways to go ahead. Nadan dogs are very easy to train as they grasp things quickly. The best way to train them is with the help of treats, as they really love to be acknowledged for their good behavior.

Price

The price of a pup from the Nadan Dog Breed ranges from ₹4,000 to ₹7,000/-. But you need to make sure that you buy them from a good and reputed breeder to avoid further complications for both the dog and you.

However, the price of this breed can vary depending on various factors such as attributes, characteristics, location, availability, purity, etc.

Also, if you aren’t willing to buy one, you can also adopt one from the streets or shelter homes since many little fur buddies deserve a happy home.

Expenses

As this breed is easy to maintain, there are not many expenses you need to incur to make your dog’s life better. You can buy stuff for them, but that doesn’t go very expensive.

You would have to spend around ₹3,000 annually for their vaccinations and other supplements.

The cost for Spaying and Neutering can cause you extra money, but that’s just a one-time expense, as per what is required.

Also, the Nadan dog doesn’t fall ill often, at least not during the initial years. You might want to take your dog for some regular checkups in the first year to avoid any complications.
